Update June 22-29

6/29/2015

It’s Holiday
It is now holiday here in Port Elizabeth. All students (including my daughter) now have a 3-week break from school.
With that said we only had 5 people at or youth night this Friday but we are not going to let that hold us back. Our Sunday School class was low as well but we will continue to visit and make contacts during the holiday.
Our language vocabulary is steadily growing and we are constructing very simple sentences. Our language teacher, Lubabalo, and his family came over to our house for dinner this past week. It was a good lesson in culture and customs for us as we try to assimilate to the culture here.
We have our visa extension appointment tomorrow. As of now we only have 90 days here in SA and we need 90 more. Please pray that everything goes smoothly. We have had our eyes opened to how other countries deal with foreigners and we hope we have all we need to get the extension.
Thank you to all of you for the prayers and support. We can be reached by Facebook and email at any time, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Our website is NO longer www.sullivansinsouthafrica.weebly.com. We can now be seen at www.sullivansinsouthafrica.com or www.projectsouthafrica.com.
God has been so good to us and all the glory is His.

Update: June 8-13 Busy!

 Busy, busy, busy!

In our two short weeks here, we have had a lot going on! First and foremost, we know for us to have any successful ministry here, we must speak to people's hearts. In order to speak to their hearts, we MUST learn their language.  With that being said, the majority of our time goes into language school.

On an exciting note, We have been given the opportunity to  start a youth class at New Life Baptist Church. We had our fist service this past Sunday, and were thrilled with  10 in attendance! We look to grow this class through "youth nights," every Friday, and Sunday school.

We have finally got moved all the way into our home and its nice to finally have our own vehicle to drive around. Driving here is difficult,  we are getting accustomed to driving on the opposite side of the road.

I got the privilege  to preach at New Life this past week. God has allowed us many opportunities to serve him and we are undeserving but thankful for the chance to serve our Saviour. It is our reasonable service.

Please help us pray for:
- Salvation for the lost in SA
- A young man to train
- Our new Youth class
- Language Learning
- Preparation for deputation.

Josh and I were so excited to finally begin language school yesterday! We have been warned that this is an extremely hard language to learn, but after class yesterday, we were feeling pretty good about it. Today, after class, we had the opportunity to go out visiting in one of the townships,  and practice what we have learned. While visiting, I had several thoughts running through my head.
First of all, learning a language is an extremely humbling experience! We stopped several people on the street today and tested out our xhosa. It felt like before we opened our mouths, they were laughing at us. I found myself not wanting to talk to these people, because I was embarrassed. The Lord touched my heart thinking about this. Proverbs 11:2 says, "When pride cometh then cometh shame; but with the lowly is wisdom." If I'm going to learn this language my pride needs to go out the window. My pastor always says, "If you have never embarassed yourself for God, then you've probably never done much for God." I would say that's a very true statement. Josh and I are praying we can die to self and work hard to learn this language!
Secondly, I was thinking, " Wow! the fields are truly white unto harvest!"  I know, this is true everywhere, including back at home. But while walking through the township, the Lord deepened my burden for South Africa. As you look, you think, " Oh how sad! There are so many needs here!" But more than anything, these people need to hear the gospel. And they need someone to tell them.
I am so thankful for the opportunity to be here, and I pray the Lord will continue to work in my heart, so I can better serve Him!

June 1-6 Update

Update:

We are in our new home and loving it! Great news, our missing bags have been found.. Today is day 3 and we are already learning so much.

1 Timothy 6:2 "And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort."

God has blessed Port Elizabeth, South Africa with three determined missionaries. They have a plan, they are prepared, and they have a vision. I am excited to train under them.

This week bro. Randy Stirewalt, a 37 year veteran missionary to Kenya, is here meeting with the missionaries as well as teaching the native pastors. It has been a blessing learning from him!

Church planting is still the focus here. The need and the potential is great. Will you pray for South Africa today?

God bless you.

In Christ,

Josh Sullivan
